How GIF Text Adding Works

GIF Text Editor uses ImageMagick’s per-frame text annotation to overlay your text on every frame of the animated GIF. The tool coalesces all frames first — ensuring correct compositing even for GIFs that use delta-only frames — annotates each frame at your chosen position with the selected font size, color, and style, then runs optimizeLayers() to keep the output file size close to the original. Unlike browser-canvas-only tools, server-side annotation handles complex GIF frame-disposal methods correctly.

Font: DejaVu Sans (always available on the server). No watermark is added. Files are automatically deleted from our servers within 30 minutes of processing.

Frequently asked questions

Does the text appear on every frame?

Yes. The text overlay is applied to all frames using ImageMagick’s per-frame annotate pass. Your caption appears consistently at the same position throughout playback.

What file size limit applies?

You can upload GIFs up to 20 MB. GIFs over 5 MB may take 15–30 seconds to process due to per-frame annotation overhead.

What fonts are available?

GIF Text Editor uses DejaVu Sans (normal and bold), which is always available on the server. It supports Latin characters and common Unicode. Custom fonts and emoji are not supported in V1. For meme-style text, select Bold + Dark band for the classic caption look.

Will my GIF have a watermark?

No. Only the text you enter is added to the GIF. There is no AT USE watermark or branding on the output.

Can I choose where the text appears?

Yes. Choose Top, Center, or Bottom. The text is horizontally centered at the chosen position. Per-pixel drag positioning is planned for a future version.

What does the “caption background” option do?

Dark band adds a semi-transparent black strip behind the text — the classic meme or subtitle look. Light band adds a semi-transparent white strip, useful for dark GIFs. None renders the text directly on the animation without any background.

Are my files stored or shared?

No. Files are processed on our servers and automatically deleted within 30 minutes. We never store or share your GIFs.

Can I add text to a GIF without re-encoding it?

Text annotation requires re-compositing every frame, so re-encoding is necessary. GIF Text Editor uses ImageMagick’s optimizeLayers() after annotation to minimize the file size increase.
