How GIF Reversal Works

ImageMagick reads the frame sequence of your animated GIF and writes the frames in reverse order. No pixel data is changed — the same frames, the same color palettes, and the same loop count are all preserved. For Reverse mode, the output file size is identical to the input because it contains exactly the same frames in a different order.

Boomerang mode uses ImageMagick to append the reversed frame sequence to the original, creating a seamless forward-back loop. The output has approximately double the original file size due to the doubled frame count. Large input GIFs (>10 MB) should expect proportionally larger boomerang output.

Common use cases: social media reaction GIFs benefit from Boomerang for endless loop appeal; product demos use Reverse to show a process returning to its start state; meme creators use Reverse for comedic timing. The playback speed multiplier at 1.5×–2× tightens the visual punch on slow originals.

Frequently asked questions

How does reversing a GIF work?

ImageMagick reads the frame sequence and writes the frames in reverse order. Pixel data, color palettes, and loop count are unchanged. The output file size is identical to the input.

What is Boomerang mode?

Boomerang appends the reversed frame sequence to the original, so the animation plays forward then backwards in a seamless loop. The output has approximately double the frame count and file size of the original.

Will reversing change the file size?

Reverse mode: no change (same frames, reversed order). Boomerang mode: approximately 2× the original size due to the doubled frame count.

What does the speed option do?

The speed multiplier applies a playback rate to the reversed output. At 1× the original per-frame delay is preserved. Use 2× to tighten a slow GIF or 0.5× for slow-motion reversal.

What is the maximum file size?

You can upload GIFs up to 20 MB. Files are removed from the server within 30 minutes of processing.
