About WEBP → PNG conversion

What is WEBP?

WEBP is a modern image format developed by Google. It delivers significantly smaller file sizes than JPG and PNG — both in lossy and lossless modes — while maintaining comparable visual quality, making it the standard for performance-focused websites.

What is PNG?

PNG is a lossless image format that supports full transparency (alpha channel). Every pixel is preserved exactly, making it the preferred choice for logos, UI graphics, screenshots, and any image with sharp edges or flat areas of colour.

About WEBP

WebP is a web-delivery format. Browsers render it without issue, but the moment an image leaves the browser context, WebP support becomes inconsistent. Design tools released before 2022 often lack native import. Photoshop prior to version 23.0 requires a third-party plugin to open WebP files; Sketch versions before 70 have limited support. On Windows, File Explorer does not generate WebP thumbnails without a separate codec from the Microsoft Store, which on managed enterprise machines is frequently not installed. Email clients, print portals, and legacy CMS upload forms add their own blockers. Converting to PNG exits the web-only context entirely.

What WebP compression preserves and what converting to PNG reveals

A lossy WebP file has already discarded image data during its original encode. Those compression decisions are permanent in the pixel layer. Converting to PNG stores the exact pixels the WebP decoder produces, including any artifacts from the original encode. The PNG conversion step itself introduces no new degradation. For lossless WebP files, which are common in UI exports and screen captures, the PNG is a pixel-identical copy of the original image data.

Transparency from the WebP source carries through to PNG correctly. Both formats use alpha-channel transparency with the same per-pixel precision, so logos, icons, and cutout images with transparent backgrounds convert without any halo or white-fill artifacts.

About PNG

PNG was designed for precision and compatibility, not for bandwidth efficiency. On the web, those priorities conflict. PNG uses DEFLATE lossless compression, which produces files that are larger than their visual content requires — a photographic PNG carries every pixel even though human vision cannot distinguish the detail that lossless storage preserves. For photographic content served on a web page, PNG files are typically 3 to 6 times larger than an equivalent WebP at a quality level that is visually indistinguishable on screen.

Why PNG files slow down web delivery

Larger image files increase the time to first byte for image resources, push the Largest Contentful Paint later, and increase CDN bandwidth costs at scale. A product page with six 200 KB PNG thumbnails carries 1.2 MB of image payload from that section alone. Converting those six images to WebP at quality 82 typically reduces the same section to under 500 KB, with no visible difference at standard display sizes. For high-traffic pages, this reduction compounds across millions of page loads.

PNG transparency is preserved in WebP output. Logos, icons, and interface components with transparent backgrounds convert to WebP with the alpha channel intact, ready for browser rendering against any background color.

The WebP to PNG conversion happens at a software boundary: the image file exists as WebP, which is efficient for browser delivery, but the next step in your workflow requires PNG, which opens in virtually every application that handles images. That boundary appears in predictable places: design tools before 2022, corporate Windows machines without the WebP codec installed, email clients like Outlook that render WebP attachments as broken icons, print shops whose RIP software predates WebP, and upload forms that validate against an allowed-extension list that has not been updated.

Adobe Photoshop did not gain native WebP support until version 23.0 in late 2021. Before that version, opening a WebP file required a third-party plugin. Sketch added WebP import in version 70. Windows File Explorer generates WebP thumbnails only if a separate Microsoft Store codec is installed, and on managed enterprise machines that install is frequently restricted. PNG sidesteps every one of those version-specific barriers because it has been supported universally for more than two decades.

What the conversion preserves and what it cannot recover

PNG output stores exactly the pixels the WebP decoder produces. For lossless WebP files (used for screenshots, UI assets, and exports where pixel accuracy was required), the PNG is a bit-for-bit copy of the image data. For lossy WebP files, which make up the majority of WebP images on the internet, the compression artifacts from the original WebP encode are already in the pixel data and carry through unchanged to the PNG. The PNG stage adds no further degradation.

Transparent backgrounds are fully preserved. Both formats support alpha-channel transparency. Logo files, icon exports, and images with transparent areas maintain their transparency in the PNG output, ready for use in Photoshop, Word, InDesign, or any other application that handles transparent images.

When to convert WEBP to PNG

WEBP to PNG — frequently asked questions

Is converting WebP to PNG lossless?

The conversion step itself is lossless. Every pixel the WebP decoder produces is stored in the PNG with no additional compression or quality reduction applied. If the source WebP was a lossy encode (as most WebP files on websites are), the compression artifacts from that original encode are already baked into the pixel data and are carried through to the PNG unchanged. The PNG stage does not degrade the image further.

Why is the PNG file so much larger than the WebP source?

WebP achieves smaller file sizes through compression algorithms (derived from the VP8 video codec) that outperform PNG's DEFLATE. Converting to PNG means switching to a lossless container that stores every pixel without those shortcuts. A photographic WebP typically converts to a PNG 3 to 6 times larger. A lossless WebP converts to a PNG 1.2 to 2 times larger. This size increase is the cost of universal software compatibility -- the PNG opens everywhere, the WebP does not.

Does the transparency from my WebP file survive conversion to PNG correctly?

Yes. Both WebP and PNG support full alpha-channel transparency, including partial transparency from anti-aliased edges. Transparent areas in the WebP source are reproduced correctly in the PNG output. When you open the PNG in Photoshop, GIMP, Figma, or any other transparency-aware application, the transparent regions appear as expected against a checkered or colored background.

Can I use the PNG in Microsoft Office documents like Word and PowerPoint?

Yes. PNG is natively supported in every version of Microsoft Office from 2003 onward. You can insert, resize, and crop the PNG in Word and PowerPoint without any format-error messages. WebP requires Office 2019 or Microsoft 365, and even in those versions support varies by application and build. For guaranteed compatibility across all Office versions and machines, PNG is the safe choice.

Is the WebP to PNG converter free?

Yes. No account required, no watermarks on output, no per-file usage cap beyond the 20 MB file size limit.
