Audio Pitch Changer — Shift MP3/WAV Pitch in Semitones Online Free

Audio Pitch Changer is a free browser-based tool for transposing the pitch of audio files without installing software. Upload an MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC, or AAC file up to 50 MB, choose a pitch shift between −12 and +12 semitones, and download the result in the original format. How pitch shifting works

The tool uses FFmpeg's asetrate filter to change the audio's sample rate, shifting pitch proportionally. To shift up by N semitones, the new sample rate is calculated as origRate × 2^(N/12). With "Preserve tempo" on, an atempo filter then compensates the speed change, keeping the audio at its original duration. With preserve tempo off, the rate change is left intact — the audio plays at a different speed as well as pitch, producing the classic tape-speed effect.

Semitones and musical intervals

A semitone is the smallest interval in Western music — the distance between adjacent piano keys. Common transpositions that preserve musical relationships: +5 semitones (perfect fourth up), +7 semitones (perfect fifth up), −5 (perfect fourth down), −7 (perfect fifth down). Shifting by ±12 semitones moves the audio exactly one octave up or down. The preset chips cover the four most useful musical transpositions; the slider and number input allow any integer value from −12 to +12.

Best results within ±7 semitones

The FFmpeg pitch-shift chain produces best results within ±7 semitones (a perfect fifth). Beyond that range, audible artifacts — phasing, robotic timbre, pitch smearing — become more pronounced because the sample-rate approach lacks the formant correction of professional DAW pitch-shift algorithms. For extreme transpositions or studio-quality results, dedicated pitch-shift tools like Audacity's "Change Pitch" effect (with formant correction) or a commercial DAW are more appropriate. For typical karaoke transpositions (±2 to ±5 semitones to fit a vocal range), this tool delivers clean, immediately usable results.
