Video Screenshot is a free browser-based tool for grabbing a single still image from any video at a precise moment. Upload an MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI, or MKV file up to 100 MB, enter a timestamp in hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds, choose an output format (JPG, PNG, or WebP), and download the captured frame instantly. The tool runs server-side via FFmpeg — no browser plugin, no desktop install required.

The most common use case is capturing a specific moment for a thumbnail, a blog illustration, a social post, or a product screenshot. Rather than using a video player's screenshot function (which adds UI chrome, depends on screen resolution, and produces a PNG of the entire screen), this tool delivers the raw frame at its native video resolution — or at a chosen max width — with no browser chrome and no interface artifacts.

Timestamp precision

The timestamp is entered as HH:MM:SS.mmm — hours, minutes, seconds, and milliseconds. FFmpeg seeks to the exact position before extracting the frame, giving millisecond precision. Fixed-frame-rate videos (the standard for MP4 from phones, cameras, and screen recorders) return the exact frame at or just before the specified time. Variable-frame-rate (VFR) recordings — common in some GoPro and DSLR outputs — may return a frame that is one or two frames off from the exact millisecond; this is a known FFmpeg behavior with VFR sources.

Output format and size

JPG is the default: smallest file size, ideal for web use, social sharing, and email. PNG is lossless: larger file but preserves every pixel exactly, correct for design assets, screenshots used in documents, or any image that will be further edited. WebP is the modern format: smaller than JPG at equivalent quality, natively supported in Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge since 2022, and the best choice for web publication when file size matters.

The output size options let you downscale while preserving the aspect ratio. "Original" keeps the video's native resolution — typically 1920×1080 for Full HD or 3840×2160 for 4K footage. Choosing 1920, 1280, or 1080 sets the max width; the height is scaled proportionally. This is useful when you want a web-ready image at a specific width without cropping.

When to use this vs. Video Frame Extractor

This tool is for capturing one specific frame at a known timestamp. If you need to extract frames at regular intervals across a video — every 2 seconds, every 5 seconds — use the Video Frame Extractor, which lets you set an extraction interval and downloads all frames as a ZIP archive.

Common use cases

Frequently asked questions

How precise is the timestamp?

The timestamp is accurate to the millisecond. Variable-frame-rate (VFR) videos may return a frame slightly off from the exact moment — this is a known FFmpeg behavior. For fixed-frame-rate videos (most MP4s from cameras and screen recorders), the capture is exact.

Which video formats are supported?

MP4, MOV, WEBM, AVI, and MKV files up to 100 MB. Most modern video files from cameras, screen recorders, and phones are supported.

What is the difference between JPG, PNG, and WebP output?

JPG is smallest — ideal for social sharing or web use. PNG is lossless and better for design work or when you need to preserve every pixel. WebP offers the best balance of file size and quality and is supported by all modern browsers.

Can I extract multiple frames at once?

This tool captures one frame at a specific timestamp. To extract many frames at regular intervals, use our Video Frame Extractor — it lets you set an interval (every Nth second) and downloads a ZIP of all frames.

Is my video stored on the server?

The video is processed on our server using FFmpeg and automatically deleted after the frame is generated. No account required, no data retained beyond the session.
