JPEG files carry a fully processed image: white balance was applied by the camera or editor, a tone curve was baked in, and detail was discarded during JPEG compression. What remains is an 8-bit, sRGB-rendered image with no recovery headroom in the highlight or shadow regions. Lightroom imports JPEG as a rendered pixel file; the Develop module works on the available 8-bit data, and some controls behave with narrower range than they would on a native RAW input. JPEG as the source for DNG conversion

Converting JPEG to DNG wraps the JPEG pixel data in a DNG 1.4 container that Lightroom, Capture One, and other DAM applications treat as a RAW input. DNG (Digital Negative) is Adobe's open RAW container format, published in 2004. It serves two distinct roles: as a native capture format from cameras and smartphones (Google Pixel via the Android Camera API raw output, Leica, Ricoh, Pentax, Hasselblad), and as a conversion target for photographers who want a standardized, future-proof format for their RAW archives. DNG in Lightroom Classic catalog workflows

Lightroom Classic treats a linear DNG as a first-class RAW file: it generates standard preview cache entries, applies camera profile defaults, stores all develop adjustments as XMP metadata in the file, and makes the file compatible with RAW-targeted develop presets. In a catalog where the dominant file type is DNG or another RAW format, JPEG-derived DNGs integrate without the import mode switching or preset inconsistency that direct JPEG imports sometimes produce. For photographers archiving client-delivered JPEGs in a RAW-first workflow, DNG conversion normalizes the file type across the catalog.
