HEIC is Apple's High Efficiency Image Container used by iPhones and iPads. It delivers high image quality at roughly half the file size of JPEG, but has limited compatibility on non-Apple platforms — converting to JPG or PNG improves interoperability.
PNG is a lossless image format that supports full transparency (alpha channel). Every pixel is preserved exactly, making it the preferred choice for logos, UI graphics, screenshots, and any image with sharp edges or flat areas of colour.
HEIC (High-Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on every iPhone and iPad since iOS 11, released in 2017. Apple adopted it to replace JPEG after nearly four decades — not for aesthetic reasons, but for pure efficiency. A 12-megapixel photo that takes 3.5 MB as a JPEG typically occupies just 1.5–2 MB as HEIC, with no visible difference in quality.
The compression comes from HEVC (H.265), the same video codec that makes 4K streaming practical on mobile connections. HEVC analyzes the image in chunks and encodes spatial patterns more efficiently than JPEG's block-based DCT algorithm. The result is 10-bit color depth — compared to JPEG's 8-bit — which means smoother gradients and more accurate shadow and highlight detail, particularly in portrait and landscape photography.
HEIC also functions as a container, not just a codec. A single .heic file can hold a burst sequence, a Live Photo (the still frame plus the short video clip), or a portrait-mode photo with its depth map intact — all in one file. JPEG cannot do any of this.
HEIC's efficiency comes at a cost: it requires hardware support and licensed software to decode. Windows does not open HEIC files natively. Most Android devices cannot display them. Chrome, Firefox, and Edge do not render HEIC in the browser. The majority of websites, online forms, and file-upload services expect JPEG or PNG. Print labs, stock photo sites, Google Drive's web viewer, Facebook, Instagram, and Microsoft Office all work with JPEG — not HEIC.
If you've ever emailed an iPhone photo to a Windows user and had them tell you it won't open, or tried to upload a photo and gotten a "file type not supported" error, HEIC is why.
Converting HEIC to JPEG is a decode-then-re-encode process. The HEVC-compressed data is decoded to a raw pixel grid, then re-encoded using JPEG's algorithm. Both formats are lossy, so this is technically a second lossy compression step. In practice, at quality settings of 82% or higher, the difference is imperceptible — even at full zoom on a high-resolution monitor. If you need to compare, open the original HEIC on an iPhone or Mac and the converted JPEG side-by-side; at typical sharing sizes, they are visually identical.
EXIF metadata — including the date, camera settings, and GPS coordinates — is preserved in the conversion unless you explicitly strip it. The primary still frame is extracted and converted. Live Photo motion clips, depth maps, and HDR metadata are not carried into the JPEG; JPEG has no container for them.
A 2 MB HEIC photo typically becomes a 3–5 MB JPEG at 85% quality. This isn't a flaw in the converter — it's the fundamental difference in codec efficiency. HEIC is the more compact format. Converting to JPEG expands the file because JPEG needs more bytes to represent the same visual data. If final file size matters, consider converting to AVIF instead: AVIF is an open-standard successor to HEIC with comparable compression and broad browser support in 2024 and beyond.
iPhones embed precise GPS coordinates in every photo's EXIF data by default. When you convert HEIC to JPEG, that location data transfers to the new file. If you're uploading converted photos to a public website, a social media profile, or a forum, anyone who downloads the image and reads its EXIF data can see exactly where it was taken — your home, your workplace, your children's school.

If you live entirely within Apple's ecosystem — shooting on iPhone, editing on Mac, storing in iCloud Photos, viewing on Apple TV — HEIC is the right choice. Apple's apps handle it natively, you preserve more visual data in less storage, and Live Photos stay intact. Convert when you need to cross the boundary: sharing with Windows or Android users, uploading to a website, submitting to a print lab, using in a presentation, or archiving in a format that will open on any device in ten years.
PNG (Portable Network Graphics) was created in 1996 as a patent-free, lossless replacement for the GIF format. It stores every pixel with perfect accuracy — no compression artifacts, no quality degradation on re-save — making it the standard for logos, icons, UI screenshots, charts, diagrams, and any image where pixel-perfect fidelity is more important than file size.
PNG supports full alpha channel transparency, meaning each pixel can range from fully opaque to fully transparent (with all gradations in between). This lets logos and icons sit cleanly on any background color without a white box or halo around the edges. JPEG has no transparency support at all; for any web image that needs a transparent background, PNG is the standard choice. WEBP and AVIF also support transparency, with smaller file sizes — but PNG remains the most universally compatible transparent-background format.
PNG uses DEFLATE, a lossless compression algorithm. Every save produces bit-for-bit identical output, and no detail is ever discarded. For images with large flat areas of color, sharp geometric edges, and text, PNG compression is very efficient — a flat-color logo in PNG is often smaller than the same image as a maximum-quality JPEG. For photographs with complex color gradients, PNG files are large because lossless compression cannot discard the tonal variation; JPEG or WEBP is a better choice for photographic content.
All browsers support PNG natively. It is the correct format for screenshots, UI mockups, logos, icons, product diagrams, and any image that must remain crisp and color-accurate after export. For web delivery where file size matters and transparency is not required, WEBP offers 25–35% smaller files. For transparent images on modern browsers, WEBP or AVIF are more efficient alternatives — but PNG remains the universal fallback that works in every context, including email, desktop software, and print production workflows.
HEIC is the default photo format on every iPhone and iPad running iOS 11 or later. Apple chose it because it stores images at roughly half the file size of JPEG at the same visual quality — an efficient format for a device that takes thousands of photos over its lifetime. That efficiency creates friction outside Apple's ecosystem. PNG has been universally supported across every operating system, browser, design application, and print workflow since the late 1990s. JPEG has no alpha channel. Any HEIC image that contains transparent areas — a cut-out product photo, an icon with a clear background, a Logo Ident with a transparent layer — will have those transparent pixels composited against white in a JPEG output. PNG retains the full alpha channel. For the large majority of iPhone photos, which are fully opaque, this distinction does not matter. For design assets, screen recordings, screenshots with transparent overlays, or any HEIC file where transparency exists and needs to survive the conversion, PNG is the correct target format. If file size is the priority and transparency is not needed, HEIC to JPG is the smaller output.
PNG uses lossless compression. Every pixel in the output is stored exactly as decoded from the HEIC source. No additional compression artifacts are introduced by the conversion step. HEIC itself is a lossy format in most camera captures — your iPhone applies HEVC compression when you take a photo — so any existing compression detail that was discarded at capture time is not recoverable. But the PNG output does not add any new compression on top of that: it captures precisely what the HEIC contains, pixel for pixel.
PNG files from HEIC sources are larger than the original HEIC. A 2 MB HEIC photo typically produces a PNG of 5–12 MB, depending on image dimensions, content complexity, and the amount of tonal variation. This is expected: HEIC achieves its size efficiency through lossy HEVC compression. PNG stores every decoded pixel without discarding anything. For sharing, use the PNG. For archiving at minimum storage cost, keep the HEIC as the source copy.

Yes. EXIF metadata embedded in the HEIC — including GPS coordinates, capture time, camera model, aperture, shutter speed, and ISO — transfers to the PNG output. If you are sharing the PNG publicly and do not want location data visible to others, run the output through the EXIF Remover tool to strip the metadata before uploading.
On Windows, HEIC requires a codec from the Microsoft Store to open natively. Windows 11 includes basic HEIC support in some configurations, but File Explorer thumbnails and Windows Photo Viewer may still fail without the codec. macOS Preview supports HEIC natively from macOS High Sierra onward. Converting to PNG bypasses the codec requirement entirely — PNG opens everywhere without additional software.
No. PNG is a static image format. The converter extracts the primary still frame from the Live Photo and converts it to PNG. The short video clip that accompanies a Live Photo is not carried into the PNG output. For the full Live Photo, keep the original HEIC file in Apple Photos or export as a MOV via the Photos app.
